Criminal Injury Claims
If you have suffered an injury due to the criminal actions of another party, you should be able to make a claim for compensation. In the event of you suffering physical or mental injury, we apply on your behalf to the Criminal Injury Compensation Authority. You are only eligible for a criminal injury claim from the CICA if you were injured in England, Scotland or Wales.
The criminal injury claims procedure is straightforward enough - you will need medical documentation of your injury, you must have reported the criminal injury to the police within two days of it occurring and you must claim for compensation for that injury within two years. There are some extenuating circumstances in which you can breach those limits, but generally speaking they are considered sufficient for the purposes of the CICA.
There are 25 very well defined levels of criminal injury claims available from CICA, ranging from £1,000 to £250,000, although other costs and losses can be taken into account up to a maximum of £250,000. This means that the maximum amount that can ever be received from a criminal injury claim to the CICA is £500,000.
